Advancing Water Justice & Building Community Power This year was a time of scaling up and grounding our work. We invested in the infrastructure, relationships, and tools needed to pivot, influence, and enact meaningful change, which will be essential in the coming years as we fight to protect our waters and communities. From creating values-aligned legal power to increasing community education, science, and regional policy capacity, we laid the groundwork for a more equitable and resilient watershed. Bayou City Waterkeeper took bold strides in protecting and restoring the lower Galveston Bay watershed in Greater Houston while centering communities most impacted by water pollution, flooding, and climate change. This year, our efforts have been marked by transformative growth, innovative strategies, and a steadfast commitment to water justice. This year our work has focused on: - Building Community Power: Through initiatives like the CRANe Community Advisory Board, Water Justice Zones, and direct response work, we amplified community voices and supported grassroots advocacy. Our wetland walks and educational workshops deepened connections between residents and the ecosystems that sustain us.
- Policy and Legal Advocacy: The adoption of our first-ever policy agenda and leadership in coalitions like Surge Forward and the Water Equity and Climate Resilience Caucus' Southern Regional Workgroup elevated our influence at local, state, and national levels. Our legal efforts addressed industrial risks and environmental injustices, ensuring stronger regulatory oversight and accountability.
- Organizational Growth: With an expanded team and the launch of a funded environmental justice fellowship, we strengthened our capacity to respond to urgent challenges and advance water justice. Our interns, fellows, and staff brought diverse perspectives and skills, enriching every aspect of our work.
As we move forward, Bayou City Waterkeeper is poised to take bold action, leveraging the progress made in 2024 to address systemic water issues at every level. With a renewed focus on justice, conservation, and community power, we are ready to meet the challenges of the future head-on. Please consider making a meaningful donation to BCWK in this year of growth, and learn more about our accomplishments in our blog! Our team is closing out the going offline for needed rest and regeneration, and I hope you will too. For Our Waters & Communities, | |
