Houston: Dozens of bayous, thousands of acres of wetlands, and a string of coastal bays. A place that regularly floods and is surrounded by industry. The birthplace of environmental justice. Our home needs a strong Clean Water Act.
How water is protected and managed affects how we live. It affects how safe we are from flooding, how we are exposed to pollution, and whether we can trust the quality of the water coming out of our faucets.
The federal government is working to undo harms created by the Trump administration, which stripped away some of the only protections in the state of Texas for our water, wetlands, and communities who depend on them. As the new administration creates a rule that determines what waters the Clean Water Act will protect, we want the EPA to understand how important these federal protections are to our basic health and quality of life.
In Houston, we want a rule that recognizes the role wetlands play in protecting us from flooding, keeps dangerous chemicals out of our water, addresses infrastructure injustices, and recognizes the reality of climate change. We want a rule that protects what makes this region special. Our wetlands, open prairies, network of bayous, and coastal bays. And our people.
