Galveston Island, Bolivar Peninsula, and Galveston Bay are the heart of the Upper Texas Coast. Coastal residents have lived, worked, fished and sailed in and around these waters for generations. Galveston Bay is home to redfish, shrimp, oysters, coastal birds, and more - all of which depend on easy access between the bay and the Gulf.
Right now, the Army Corps of Engineers is considering a suite of projects—including two miles of massive sea gates and a levee ring barrier — intended to reduce the impacts of storm surge from the Gulf of Mexico. These structures are proposed to be placed across Galveston Island, Bolivar Peninsula, and Bolivar Roads—the opening between the Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
This plan will dramatically change our communities, the ecosystem our seafood industry relies on, habitat for wildlife and marine life.
The draft plan is currently out for public comment - this is the opportunity to let the Army Corps of Engineers know our concerns for the health of our waters, environment, and our communities. Let the Army Corps know we want alternatives that protects our communities - not disconnects it from our natural spaces. All projects must undergo extensive environmental review to ensure that they don't cause undue harm to the natural resources our region depends on.
